Cohiba Cigars: The Best Cuban Cigars

The cigar brand Cohiba represents the most prestigious and globally recognized Cuban longfillers. Since 1966, they have exuded an aroma that has captivated millions of aficionados around the world. Crafted from the finest raw tobaccos from across Cuba, all of which undergo a triple fermentation process, Cohiba cigars are available in a wide range of vitolas ("formats"). The most famous among the traditional Cohiba cigars are undoubtedly the Esplendidos, Robustos, and Lanceros. In recent years, the Siglo VI and the Piramides Extra have been added to the lineup. Additionally, the Cohiba Maduro 5 series with its very dark and extensively fermented wrapper and the renowned Cohiba Behike BHK cigars were introduced.

Cuban Cigar Factory El Laguito Cohiba
The legendary Cohiba cigar factory: "El Laguito" in Havana

All Cohiba cigar formats are rolled at the El Laguito factory. Here, in arguably the most famous factory in the world, Cuba's best torcedores craft the planet's most renowned cigars. The Cohiba factory also holds the exclusive right to the first tobacco harvest, ensuring that only the highest-quality leaves from each year's crop are selected and processed for the production of Cohiba cigars.

A unique feature exclusive to Cohiba is the additional third fermentation. Both Seco and Ligero tobaccos are aged for another 18 months in cedarwood casks after harvesting. This exclusive process gives the premium Habanos their distinctive flavor, characterized by grassy notes, complemented by robust roasted aromas harmoniously accompanied by hints of vanilla, cocoa, and coffee—creating the unique flavor profile of Cohiba cigars.

The Story of a Global Success

The origin of Cohiba is surrounded by an almost mythical story: According to legend, in 1963, Fidel Castro was offered a cigar by one of his bodyguards, who had received it from a friendly torcedor. The cigar must have made a lasting impression on Castro—so much so that he summoned the torcedor, a man named Eduardo Rivera, and appointed him as his personal cigar roller. Foreign dignitaries visiting Cuba were offered these cigars, often with personalized bands bearing their names.

With the start of production at the current El Laguito factory, these cigars were named Cohiba—the name the Taino Indians once gave to their cigars. Initially, only a limited selection of vitolas was produced.

The first vitolas of the newly established brand included Laguito No. 1–3, as well as the Lancero—the very cigar that supposedly fascinated Fidel Castro—Corona Especiales, and the classic slim Panetela format.

Cohiba Linea Clasica

It wasn't until 1982 that this once-secret cigar brand was introduced to the public in Madrid, marking its entry into the international market. The most successful addition came in 1989 with the Linea Clasica, which includes popular vitolas such as the grand Esplendido, the Exquisito, and the Robusto.
