When the clear air drifts across Lake Schliersee from the edge of the Alps, it is pure pleasure. SLYRS captures this moment and bottles it as Bavarian single malt whisky.
SLYRS Origin: Bavarian Single Malt Whisky
At SLYRS, everything begins with a wager that sounds equally like adventure and craftsmanship: in 1994, Florian Stetter travels to Scotland with fellow master distillers, discovers parallels to his Bavarian homeland and backs the idea of producing a first-class Single Malt Whisky in Upper Bavaria. What starts as a tongue-in-cheek bet turns into a serious undertaking that takes shape in his parents’ distillery at Schliersee and continues to define the brand’s character to this day.
Development of SLYRS: Distillery and Mountain Warehouse
In 1999, the team distils the first SLYRS Single Malt; by 2002, the first bottles go on sale and sell out within a short time. The dedicated whisky distillery in Neuhaus am Schliersee follows in 2007, marking SLYRS’ consistent progression from pioneering project to a firm fixture in the German whisky landscape. Equally distinctive is the mountain warehouse established in 2014 at 1,501 metres on Mount Stümpfling, adding an extra dimension of maturity and tension to the whisky.
Taste and Character: Typical Aromas of SLYRS Whisky
The foundation remains deliberately pure: barley malt and pure mountain spring water from the Bannwald spring at the foot of the Alps. Maturation begins in new 225-litre American white oak casks, which lend the whisky its colour and structure while shaping the unmistakable SLYRS signature.
In the glass, SLYRS is full-bodied and well-balanced, led by a subtle sweetness and a malty core, accompanied by notes of vanilla and a light, hay-like brightness.
Characterful SLYRS Bottlings Compared
- SLYRS Bavarian Single Malt Whisky 12 Years Aged
Twelve years of maturation create depth and balance. Malt, vanilla and oak unfold in harmony, making this bottling particularly suitable for connoisseurs seeking well-aged German whisky.
- SLYRS Bavarian Single Malt Whisky
Mild, clear and approachable. The ideal introduction to the world of SLYRS with balanced maltiness, subtle sweetness and an uncomplicated character.
- SLYRS Bavarian Single Malt Whisky Oloroso Cask Finish
The Oloroso finish complements the classic SLYRS style with notes of dark fruit and nuts, adding greater depth and spice while maintaining a clear structure.
Distillation takes place in a copper pot still designed for craftsmanship rather than mass production, and this precision is evident in the clean, harmonious finish. Those who choose the special editions will also discover how former sweet wine casks or cask finishes introduce fruity depth and spicy accents.
SLYRS Recommendation: German Single Malt with Provenance
SLYRS stands for Bavarian single malt whisky that does not merely claim its origin but makes it tangible through the interplay of water, climate and cask policy. If you are looking for a whisky from Germany that remains approachable while offering enough depth for long evenings, SLYRS is a very reliable choice.
