Jirsa - a well-known name
Oldrich Jirsa with his small but fine pipe manufactory in the Czech Republic should already be a household name to many pipe smokers. This is because his pipes have been an integral part of a well-known pipe dealer in northern Germany for several decades, who offers his products through an annual catalogue.
Beginnings in the 1990s
Oldrich (Short version: Olda) has been making pipes since 1994. Before that, he had worked a lot with wood, making souvenirs for Prague souvenir dealers. One day a pipe collector recognised his talent and asked him if he could make figural pipe bowls for him. From that moment on, he was attached to the subject. Originally, however, he was a trained toolmaker. On his second course of education he devoted himself to another subject - psychology and psychotherapy.
Modern workshop
The workshop in Rynholec is modern and fully equipped. In addition to CNC machines on which the pipe bowls are pre-turned, there are also machines that produce mouthpieces. Here, mouthpieces are produced from a polyester-acrylic mixture in a centrifugal injection moulding process. This makes the manufactory independent of external suppliers and more flexible. It also reduces production costs. He himself works part-time in the workshop, as well as his son, a full-time employee and a part-time employee.
Good briar is rare
Jirsa also senses an increasing difficulty in getting good briar. Therefore, very bright, smooth pipes can only be made on demand, and not to order. Rusticated and reddish-brown smooth pipes account for the largest share of production. Sandblasted pipes are rare, and by no means "rejects". Only good woods can be used here.
Difficult shapes - no problem
Because of the use of CNC-machines, even complicated shapes can be produced in large quantities. Facetted pipes, pipes with symmetrical edges and precise machining are therefore part of the standard programme.
Unique signature
Jirsa pipes, for example, have a very typical, characteristic look that is immediately identified by connoisseurs. The narrow, bright acrylic band as mouthpiece decoration is one of the distinguishing features of every Jirsa pipe. A good 90% of all pipes are equipped with a drilling for 9mm filters, but pipes with 6mm or 4mm bores are also produced.
Price-performance winner
All in all, Jirsa pipes are characterised by a very precise manufacturing and an excellent price-performance ratio, which makes them so quickly incomparable with the competitors on the market. If you don't have a Jirsa in your collection yet, it's time!
