How to Store Pipe Tobacco Properly and Keep It Fresh
Proper storage is an essential part of enjoying pipe tobacco. While it may sound technical at first, it is actually quite simple to achieve. Just as cigars thrive under specific climate conditions and many aficionados therefore own a humidor, pipe tobacco should also be protected from drying out. For a few days, the original tin is usually sufficient. However, if you plan to store your tobacco for a longer period, you should use a container designed to keep it consistently moist.
A tobacco bowl should be made from a material that does not interact with the tobacco. Unlike cigar humidors, which are typically crafted from Spanish cedar, pipe tobacco should be stored in a neutral material such as ceramic, glass, or plastic. The ideal humidity level for pipe tobacco is 55 to 60 percent.
Keeping Pipe Tobacco Moist and Avoiding Common Storage Mistakes
Some tobacco bowls come with a built-in humidification system, while others can easily be brought to the desired humidity by adding a Boveda Pack. One method we strongly discourage is the old "grandpa's trick" that remains a persistent myth: placing a piece of potato or apple peel inside the container. This affects the flavor of your tobacco and, in the worst case, can rot inside the bowl, making the entire contents unpleasant. If you store your tobacco for an extended period, it is also a good idea to shake the container occasionally. It may sound unusual, but it helps promote air circulation inside.
