Cigarillos from Ireland: Origin Between Trade and Processing
If Ireland appears on the cigarillo shelf, it is most likely not due to domestic cultivation. Historical sources do point to tobacco cultivation in Ireland, but this development had already stagnated by the 19th century.
At the same time, an early tobacco processing tradition emerged with companies such as P. J. Carroll in Dundalk. For this reason, Irish origin in the context of cigarillos has always been primarily a story of manufacturing, blending, and trade – rather than one of Irish tobacco fields.
Decline of Production: Cigarillos from Ireland Today
In the past, cigarillos from Ireland occasionally made their way to us, but today it has grown quiet around cigarillos from the Emerald Isle.
With the closure of the ECMI factory in Ballaghaderreen in 2017, a major player shut its doors. Strict regulations governing the Irish sales market have also contributed to the decline of domestic production.
There is a mandatory labeling requirement for tobacco products, and individual retail outlets must obtain a license each year.
