His life took a decisive turn in 1838 when Riise received an offer to work in the West Indies, as the Caribbean was known at the time. At that time, rum was administered for a whole range of ailments, such as stomach complaints. Over time, it also became a recognized luxury drink, winning Riise awards even in his Danish homeland.
