A Queer Cigar? One might wonder where such a thing exists. Naturally, in the one place where you find everything that doesn’t exist elsewhere: Berlin.

BerlinCigarMen: The Queer Cigar

“Ick steh uff Berlin” – that’s how the NDW band *Ideal* summed up the Berlin spirit in 1980, cheeky yet spot-on. Back then, the city was divided, and its fenced-in western half exuded the gritty charm of a lively alternative culture. The fall of the Wall tore down that fence, and today, the new Berlin is known worldwide for its thrilling urban adventures with no curfew.

Even though the city has become sleeker – and above all, more expensive – the bear immortalized in its coat of arms still dances here like nowhere else in Germany. Whether it’s the rave culture that drew 1.5 million partygoers to Tiergarten in the ’90s, gangsta rap, or hipsters in lumberjack shirts – every subculture finds its niche in Berlin.

From a Schöneberg Gay Bar to the World

The same, of course, applies to the queer scene, which thrives here in a way that’s even livelier and more original than elsewhere. A group of gay aficionados has formed the BerlinCigarMen, calling themselves “Germany’s biggest gay cigar group.” At least, that’s how they describe themselves.

On the first Friday of every month, they gather in Schöneberg’s Nollendorf district, the heart of queer Berlin, and transform the local scene bar Pussycat into “Europe’s largest gay cigar lounge.” “Other places have a curfew; we have the garbage collection,” sang another Berlin band, capturing the city’s tireless nightlife.
