"Corona" - a Japanese brand name
In the 1910-1920s, there were a number of lighter-manufacturers in Japan that produced under the brand name "Corona" in a joint venture. The current manufactory joined this production association in 1933.
Certification as a sign of quality
In 1954, the Ishimitsu Kinzoku Kogyo (meaning: Ishimitsu Metalware Factory) was certified by the state with the JIS label (Japan Industry Standard) due to its reliable quality. It was the first certification of its kind in the Japanese lighter industry and ensured a high level of recognition and stood for good quality. Customers honoured the high quality standards, even though the price on the Japanese market was three times higher than that of conventional lighters.
The birth of IM Corona
Over time, the manufacturer also became active in exports and changed its name to IM Corona. The I in this case stands for Ishimitsu, the family name of the founders, and M for "Manufacturing". In this way, a name was established that differed significantly from the other Corona manufacturers.
The Old Boy and the metal potion
The first Old Boy lighter came onto the market in 1981 and is still an icon for the IM Corona brand today.
From the very beginning, the company set itself apart from the competition by using cast metal tanks, which tend to leak significantly less than tanks made of plastic or other materials. As a result, the brand gained an early reputation for producing particularly robust lighters.
Everything made in the own factory
Even today, all parts such as nozzles, ignition parts and friction wheels are still manufactured in Tokyo. In addition to the popular "Old Boy" pipe lighter with friction wheel and flint, the range also includes Pipe Master pipe lighters with electric piezo ignition. Cigar lovers will also get their money's worth with the IM Corona Flambeau, which is unusually elegant for a jetflame lighter but still very robust.
Made in Japan at its best
To this day, Im Corona stands for "Made in Japan" at the very highest level. Entire generations of tobacco connoisseurs have been using these lighters for decades. Unlike other manufacturers, Corona lighters are designed for easy maintenance and repair. Many spare parts are even freely available.
