Not from the Caribbean, but from Cologne come the cigars by Galana. No, they are not actually rolled there, but the team led by Annette Meisl certainly could—if they wanted to and had the time. In addition to selling cigars in their own specialty store in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, the ladies are frequently on the road at cigar presentations, tastings, and cigar rolling events throughout Germany and sometimes even worldwide. Here in the most beautiful city on the Rhine, Düsseldorf, this never fails to make us marvel—and feel a little envious. But the Rhenish rivalry is far less serious than carnival clubs would have us believe. First and foremost, we are extremely grateful to Annette for the work she dedicates as an ambassador of the cigar.
Businesswoman and Artist
At La Galana, the question is not where the better beer comes from; company founder Annette Meisl is devoted to the delicacies of the Caribbean. Together with her team of Cuban rollers, she runs La Galana and offers insights into cigar production. And rum and coffee are also her domain—two Caribbean elixirs of life that are simply indispensable.
The dynamic businesswoman is also a versatile artist. As a musician, she hosts her own musical evenings, and with her autobiographical book “Fünf Männer für mich” about relationship models beyond monogamy, the Cologne native caused quite a stir.
Unconventional Cigars: La Galana
La Galana is available in two different series. Both the Clásica and the Salon use tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras in the filler. Together, they create a smooth yet spirited smoke—two qualities that unite people in the Caribbean and the Rhineland.
The fact that the cigars are ultimately not rolled here in Germany is, of course, mainly due to customs and tax regulations. After all, who would want to pay for such labor-intensive serial production as cigar rolling in a high-wage country like Germany? It is therefore understandable that Annette’s team focuses on events, tastings, and representations. And that is exactly what they do exceptionally well! A Galana is a Cologne girl.
