Pipe making in the blood
Pipe making is in Lasse Skovgaard's (Jørgensen) blood. What you quickly say is actually true for him. He is the son of the famous pipe maker Benni Jørgensen, who made the best and finest pipes for W.Ø.Larsen for over 25 years. Lasse was interested in his father's work from an early age, and took a look at what was going on in the workshop.
First experiments
He began to make pipes himself, but soon had to admit that there was more to it than drilling two holes in a piece of wood. After many attempts and the strict judgement of his father, he was finally so good at his craft that he could also make pipes of medium quality for W.Ø. Larsen. He had just turned eighteen.
Teacher Teddy Knudsen
At the age of nineteen he was finally allowed to make straight grains for Larsen. Soon his father introduced him to another pipe making legend, Teddy Knudsen. Once again, he was able to learn a lot from him. He was also the one who made him known in the American pipe world.
Two mainstays
Nowadays, in his mid-30s, Lasse Skovgaard is a well-known Danish pipe maker, most famous for his sandblasted pipes. Besides his "High Grades", namely Lasse Skovgaard Freehands", he also has a second brand which he calls "by Skovgaard". These pipes are also handmade, but the pipe bowls are made with a little machine assistance. They are certainly among the best value-for-money pipes on the market today.
