Mastro de Paja: All items
From amateur to professional
After a few years as an amateur pipemaker, Giancarlo Guidi set up his own business in 1972. He calls his company Mastro de Paja, and shortly after its founding he is joined by Giannino Spadoni, who also runs pipes as a merchant. "Mastro de Paja di Guidi e Spadoni" quickly became one of the most famous and respected manufacturers in Italy.
Broken relationships
Unfortunately, the cooperation between the founders breaks down in 1981 due to different opinions on corporate strategy and other discrepancies; Guidi leaves the company to start a new one, leaving Spadoni to Mastro de Paja.
The reboot
After a short time, Spadoni gets into financial difficulties and is forced to seek help. He finds Terenzio Cecchini, who agrees to take over and run Mastro de Paja as majority owner. After a short time, Spadoni also decides to build something of his own and leaves the manufactory. Luckily, Cecchini has his eye on a young and talented man named Alberto Montini, who, first as an employee, then as a partner, will take charge of Mastro de Paja's business and initiate some important changes. Instead of selling 10,000 pipes in Italy, he decides to reduce production and export most of them. This increases the quality of the pipes significantly and also has a positive impact on demand.
Mastro de Paja Today
Today, Mastro de Paja produces around 2000 pipes a year, which meet the highest quality standards and are popular with pipe lovers worldwide. Mastro de Paja's style is very independent and unmistakable. Silverwork often plays a major role.
