My Father – Premium Cigars from Nicaragua

José (Don Pepin) Garcia, whose professional life literally began in a cigar factory, has grown from a young tobacco sorter to one of the most respected cigar manufacturers in the world. Early on, his exceptional talent for rolling cigars became evident, enabling him to win numerous competitions and become a true master of his craft. His journey took him from Cuba through Nicaragua to Miami, where a fateful meeting with Pete Johnson, the founder of Tatuaje, set the course for the future. This meeting led to the opening of a small, family-operated factory in Little Havana, laying the foundation for what My Father Cigars is today.

Unlike other large and well-known manufacturers, the small factory in Little Havana employs only a few workers who craft their cigars entirely by hand, without the use of machines. Each cigar is created slowly and with great care. Furthermore, El Rey de los Habanos Inc. operates with a unique task structure—traditionally, the roles of torcedor (cigar roller) and bunchero (filler preparation) are separated, but not here! The production method also features distinctive characteristics, such as the use of two binder leaves for greater complexity and a “triple cap” on the cigar head, making it cleaner and more robust. By 2006, just three years after the company's founding, the Miami facility had doubled in size.

Rapid Growth and Expansion

But that was just the beginning. In Estelí, Nicaragua, the Tabacalera Cubana was established through collaboration with Eduardo Fernandez, offering significantly larger production capacity than the original Miami location. Unlike in Little Havana, the division of labor in Nicaragua follows modern standards, where rollers focus on defined tasks and do not pack cigars into boxes. In Nicaragua, they also attracted a major player in the industry: Ashton. For example, the Tabacalera Cubana produces the San Cristobal (known as Paradiso in our markets) and La Aroma de Cuba (sold as La Aroma del Caribe here).

One of the more successful cigars from the Garcia family is undoubtedly the Flor de las Antillas, which has gained a devoted global following—it was crowned the best cigar of 2012 by Cigar Aficionado! Together with his son, Jaime Garcia, the “Don” has developed many successful blends under the “My Father Cigars” label, including the Classic (we also offer a Lounge Exclusive edition!), Le Bijou 1922, and the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial. Other lines include La Duena, a Connecticut Edition, and other family-series cigars like La Opulencia, The Judge, La Antiguedad, and La Promesa.
