Neerup - long time no hear!
Neerup is a name that many pipe smokers worldwide are now familiar with. Behind it is Peder Jeppesen with his family, who has his workshop in Lejre, Denmark. It has become a little quiet on the German market, but that cannot be said internationally. Because in the USA and China, people literally rip his pipes out of his hands. In Germany, it was traditionally distributed via an importer who sold his pipes to specialist dealers via a sales force. Since this collaboration ended, hardly any of his pipes have crossed the border. In the meantime, Peder sells his pipes directly, and we were able to get hold of a great range again.
The origins
Peder Jeppesen originally learned the craft of the pipe from Karl Erik Ottendahl, who died in 2004. After his death he went to Erik Nørding and deepened his knowledge. He worked here for some time until the end of the early 2000s when Georg Jensen (actually "the" Per Georg Jensen who has been the mastermind at Mac Baren for a number of years) closed his pipe factory and he took the opportunity to inspect the machinery and tooling to buy up. Peder had long wanted to start his own business and this was the opportunity he was waiting for.
Two types of production
This machine park is now responsible for the way it works and its model policy. Because there are two lines that he manufactures. On the one hand, Neerup pipes, which are roughly preformed on copy milling machines; on the other Jeppesen whistles, which are completely handmade. This is how Neerup pipes are mainly made on the old machines from the Jensen workshop. Incidentally, the name Neerup is his grandmother's maiden name, which lives on in this way. The mouthpieces are also prefabricated, which must be seen as an economic concession. This keeps Neerup pipes absolutely affordable. With these two production methods, Peder Jeppesen can cover a wide spectrum and produce pipes for every budget.
Family business
It should be clear that he cannot do all the work alone. But his family supports him wherever they can. A real family business. His wife Bettina is responsible for the "final touch" and the final finish. She also handles customer communications, social media, sales and shipping. His son Christian helps in the workshop where he can and mainly takes care of the shaping of the pipes.
Own style
The Jeppesen family business is largely responsible for its own success. But success also means that Peder has his own unmistakable style. Sturdy shapes, compact construction, colorful acrylic mouthpieces, often elaborate silverwork and contrast staining, even with sandblasted pipes, are among its inimitable features. If you see a Jeppesen or Neerup from afar, you immediately know it's one.
