What are estate pipes?
The term „Estate Pipes“ does not only refer to pipes that are sold because a pipe smoker has died, and the pipes are part of it’s estate, but the term generally refers to used pipes that have been reconditioned. Other common terms are "second-hand pipes" or "pre-smoked pipes".
Can all pipes be given a second life?
Of course, not all pipes are suitable for reconditioning. Pipes that have already been smoked must have been minimally maintained for the restoration process to be worthwhile. For example, if the pipe has been regularly knocked out at the bowl rim and ashtray, or if a pipe cleaner has only been used at Christmas and Easter, there is no point in a costly refurbishment. Even if the pipes only have a very low value, it hardly makes commercial sense to invest even more labour in an item that is likely to achieve only a low final price.
Skill for a convincing result
Well-maintained, smoked pipes can be turned back into very attractive smoking instruments with specialist knowledge, suitable tools and skilled craftsmanship. Vulcanite mouthpieces are sanded and polished to restore their black colour and shine. Briar wood surfaces are maintained, polished, stained and waxed. The carbon layer inside the pipe bowl is reduced or even completely removed. The result is pipes that are often as beautiful and good as new. But even pipes that are a little older and have acquired a venerable patina are given a well-kept appearance.
Why buy estate pipes?
As a customer, you have the opportunity to find pipes that have not been produced for a long time and that cost significantly less than they once did. This gives collectors the chance to find a coveted pipe after all. And pipe smokers who are looking for pipes from a particular era or even vintage will also get their money's worth.
Estate pipes have their place
Some people will still turn up their noses because they can't imagine smoking a pipe that once belonged to someone else. For some, on the other hand, it is completely normal to eat in a restaurant with crockery and cutlery that has only recently been used by other guests. It was then cleaned and polished. Shouldn't the same apply to pipes?
Great condition - but never new!
The estate pipes in our shop have been professionally refurbished by us - or had them refurbished - and refurbished to the best of our knowledge and belief. We photograph our estate pipes with great attention to detail, as realistically as possible. Therefore, please take a close look at the photos and read all the details. Please bear in mind that we will restore each pipe to the best of our ability, but it is impossible to restore it to its original condition. All pipes are cleared, cleaned, sanded and polished. However, we do not use any chemical substances or liquids at all.
