In the late sixties, the young pipe makers Jens “Tao” Nielsen and Poul Ilsted work in the workshop of Erik Nørding while dreaming of creating more classic and stylish Danish pipes that would stand out from the very playful freehand trend of the time.
During this period, they meet the Copenhagen banker and passionate pipe enthusiast Henrik Jørgensen, who is willing to change his career and enter the world of pipes, leading the three personalities to form a joint project.
The Founding of Svendborg Piber
The small group searches for a suitable location and, in the early seventies, finds a former pipe factory in the town of Svendborg on the island of Funen, once known as the Nordic Pipe Factory and one of Denmark’s oldest operations. From this old production site emerges the brand Svendborg Piber, which from the outset aims to combine high-quality series pipes with distinctive handmade pieces, allowing the pipes to quickly stand out from the crowd.
Established as a High-Quality Series Pipe: Svendborg Pipes
The breakthrough comes when the trio travels to Germany and meets the wholesaler Heinrich Seiffert in Kassel, who maintains high quality standards while purchasing large quantities. Within a short time, numerous new models for the German market are created at the factory in Svendborg, the workforce grows to well over a dozen employees, and Svendborg pipes establish themselves as reliable Danish briar pipes with an attractive price-performance ratio.
Brand Transition and Continuation of Svendborg
During the eighties, Tao Nielsen and Poul Ilsted increasingly focus on their personal high-end handmade pieces and leave the company, while Henrik Jørgensen continues Svendborg and places greater emphasis on high-quality series pipes. In the nineties, the brand is first transferred to the German distributor Seiffert and eventually to Planta and Design Berlin, allowing Svendborg to live on today as a traditional name, while many of the sought-after pieces are available from us as refurbished estate pipes.
