Origin and History
Yorgos Mitakidis grew up in Thessaloniki and was fascinated by music and painting from an early age, developing a keen eye for shapes, proportions, and surfaces. He later studied agricultural technology at the university in his hometown, but his true passion remained the world of arts and craftsmanship, which continued to draw him in.
First Tobacco Pipe and Craftsmanship Influences
In 2012, he purchased his first tobacco pipe along with the appropriate tobacco, inspired by memories of an old family friend who was always seen with a pipe in his mouth. What began as a personal memory developed first into a fascination with the ritual of pipe smoking, then into a deep interest in shapes, woods, and craftsmanship. Some time later, Yorgos worked in the production of traditional Greek bagpipes, where he became familiar with machinery, tools, and workshop processes that ultimately led him to his own pipe-making career.
His Own Workshop for Handmade Pipes
In 2017, he established his own workshop in Thessaloniki, where he dedicated himself entirely to the production of handmade pipes. His inspirations come primarily from the classic and neo-Danish pipe-making scene, including Paolo Becker, Les Wood, Sixten Ivarsson, Chris Asteriou, and Cornelius Mänz, whose work he studied closely.
Nevertheless, he gradually developed his own design language based on clean lines, functional proportions, and highly precise drilling. Today, Yorgos produces only a limited number of pipes each year, each individually numbered and stamped with his name and year of production, allowing collectors to follow the evolution of his work in detail.
