This series was introduced at 07.06.2008
The name is derived from calabash, the bottle gourd. The plant is really old. Thousands of years ago, the fruit was used as a drinking vessel, for storage or as a musical instrument. Soldiers of the colonial powers stationed in Africa found no briar pipes far away from home and quickly reworked the gourds by providing them with an insert made of clay into which they could stuff their tobacco.
The pumpkins were later imported to Europe and fitted with meerschaum inserts and mouthpieces.
The Calabash pipes from Butz Choquin are based on the original shape, but it is of course made from briar... The special model is one of the favorites in the manufacturer's range.
