Tsuge Urushi

Urushi lacquer is a key component of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The lacquer is derived from the sap of the Urushi tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), which hardens through exposure to humidity to form a durable, glossy protective layer.

The technique of Makie is particularly renowned. It involves the artistic application of gold or silver powders onto the still-wet lacquer surface to create intricate patterns. Each layer is meticulously applied by hand and carefully dried, resulting in unparalleled depth and durability.

Each Tsuge Urushi pipe finished with this technique becomes a unique piece, distinguished by its individual details. The pipe bowl is made from flawless briar, as any imperfections or blemishes would become highly visible through the lacquer.

All pipes are fitted with acrylic mouthpieces without filter drilling.

The application of Urushi requires great precision and represents, in Japanese culture, a deep respect for nature and materials. This philosophy makes Urushi lacquer an indispensable element of traditional craftsmanship.
