White Elephant Erta Ale

The White Elephant Erta Ale pipe series stands out above all for its unusual interplay of material and craftsmanship. It uses South American ash, which, through intensive sandblasting, acquires a deeply pronounced, almost relief-like surface. This structure is not only visually distinctive but also provides a pleasantly tactile grip in the hand. The ash-grey staining emphasizes the natural character of the wood and reinforces the impression of a rugged, mineral landscape.

At the heart of the design, however, is a detail that makes the series particularly interesting from a technical standpoint: the graphite insert in the pipe bowl. This material is fire-resistant, neutral in taste, and highly resistant to heat. As a result, the risk of burn-through is virtually eliminated, while the pipe warms up more slowly and delivers a cooler smoke overall. Break-in is not required, and the bowl is significantly easier to clean, as hardly any residue builds up.

The series is named after the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia, one of the few volcanoes with a permanently active lava lake. The barren, grey landscape surrounding this volcano is reflected in the color and surface texture of the pipes, giving them a distinctive, almost archaic appearance.
