Capstan Pipe Tobacco

The Capstan brand is one of the oldest tobacco brands still in existence today. It is probably even the oldest brand in the pipe tobacco sector; its first advertising is known from the year 1893. The maritime brand goes back to the British company W.D. & H.O. Wills in Bristol. It was known for particularly good treatment of employees and unusually extensive social benefits for the time, as well as paid holidays. At that time, the use of brand names and professional advertising was still something new, almost revolutionary. This is certainly one of the reasons for the early success of this brand.

This company later became Imperial Tobacco, which produced the tobacco until 1990. Later, the Orlik Tobacco Factory (today Scandinavian Tobacco Group) was the producer of this flake. Nowadays, the tobacco is produced by the Danish company Mac Baren.

Many famous personalities of world history smoked this tobacco with preference, the most famous person is certainly the author J.J.R. Tolkien, who among other things wrote the famous trilogy Lord of the Rings.

The flake is a mixture of different, medium-brown Virginias with medium strength and some sweetness. The yellow version is a bit lighter and reminds of the Orlik Golden Sliced. If you want to smoke a piece of history today, you should definitely try this tobacco. But be careful: you might not want to smoke anything else!

It is currently offered in two different varieties, both of which are of course available from us:

Gold Navy Cut (light, mild)
Original Navy Cut (pithy, medium-bodied)
