The Idea Behind HU Pipe Tobacco

HU Tobacco is an absolute rarity on the German tobacco market – and one that is highly envied abroad. The man “behind” HU is someone who turned his passion into a calling: Hans Wiedemann. A few years ago, he had the idea of focusing on the import of American and English tobaccos and possibly founding his own small company. When that did not work out, he thought: “Well, I’ll just do it myself.” He established his own small tobacco label, HU Tobacco. Together with the manufacturers Kopp and Dan Tobacco (DTM), he developed blends that are anything but ordinary and do not follow the mainstream. For example, there is not a single vanilla-flavored tobacco in the extensive range. Instead, the focus is clearly on English style and American influences.

Close Contact with Customers

Hans maintains an active exchange with customers, pipe enthusiasts, and specialist retailers. This is probably only possible because he considers HU Tobacco his hobby; economic interests are secondary, as in his “real life” he works in Supply Chain Planning. This allows him to realize his own ideas and respond flexibly to the wishes and needs of his customers.

HU Tobacco Series: Blends for Latakia and Virginia Lovers

His portfolio has since grown significantly, and HU now covers a wide range of interesting niches in the natural tobacco segment. One example is the Africa Line with now almost legendary tobaccos such as Asmara, Fayyum, and Indaba.

A series in which Latakia clearly plays a key role. Or the United Passion series, where Virginia and especially Flakes take center stage. Notable examples include the strong Dockworker Flake and the mild Haymaker Flake.

Exclusive Pipe Tobaccos from HU: Unique Blends for True Connoisseurs

Another special feature is that HU Tobacco regularly releases limited special editions of long-aged and exceptional tobaccos. The quantities available to each retailer are very limited, and the blends are always sold out quickly. It often took only a few days before Sancho Panza, Rocinante, and Cervantes were already being enjoyed in the pipes of connoisseurs. Hans Wiedemann plans to repeat this regularly, depending on how mature the respective tobaccos are.

HU and Its “Friends of the Pipe”

A special expression of his connection to his customers and friends can be found in the series Hommage to my Friends, Pipe Enthusiasts Germany, PRF, and CO Pipes Pfeifentabak.

Each of these is dedicated to a special group of fellow pipe smokers, many of whom are particularly active on social media. Others are pipe makers who are friends of the brand. Finally, it should be noted that HU tobaccos are not available at every train station kiosk. There is a carefully selected network of premium specialist retailers who stock these blends for true gourmets. We are pleased to be part of this network. What sets us apart from other specialist retailers is that we usually keep sufficient quantities of all blends in stock – at least as long as HU can deliver, as occasionally it takes some time for these highly individual products to be reproduced.
