Schmalzler is a real speciality that originally got its name from being greased with lard. Nowadays, paraffin or white oil is used for this because of its significantly longer shelf life.
But Schmalzler is also a real speciality in terms of taste. Most varieties contain large quantities of dark air-cured tobaccos, which are also used in cigar making.
Especially the Brazilian Mangotes - a particularly intensively fermented variety is used for Schmalzler.
So Schmazler are always a little spicier and stronger in flavour, but have numerous friends, not only in Bavaria!
