Windspiel is one of those brands whose origins alone suggest that conventional approaches aren't really its thing. The distillery was founded in 2014 by Sandra Wimmeler and Denis Lönnendonker in Germany's volcanic Eifel region. It all started with the rather unusual idea of distilling premium-quality spirits made from potatoes.
Windspiel Spirits from the Volcanic Eifel Region
Since then, the distillery in Rhineland-Palatinate has put together an appealing range of spirits. Windspiel draws inspiration from Frederick the Great, who is closely associated with the spread of potatoes in Prussia and also happened to have a fondness for greyhounds. Old Fritz probably never imagined that his potato decree would inspire a range of spirits 250 years later.
Windspiel PX Cask Rum with a Sherry Cask Finish
The range also includes a rum. Unlike the brand's potato-based spirits, Windspiel PX Cask comes from Panama. In the tropical climate, it matures for an average of seven years in former bourbon oak barrels. The spirit then receives a finish lasting several months in freshly emptied Pedro Ximénez sherry casks in the volcanic Eifel region. This additional maturation adds dried fruit, gentle sweetness and the rich character of PX sherry to the fruity and woody notes developed in the bourbon barrels. Raisins, dates, cocoa, vanilla and dark chocolate are among the aromas you can expect. Despite its dessert-like character, no sugar is added, and Windspiel also avoids artificial colouring. Anyone who prefers bold, dry rums should be prepared for a noticeably fruitier, smoother style. Fans of sherry cask maturation and velvety textures, on the other hand, will find an intriguing combination of Panama and the Eifel region. Windspiel is therefore a brand for people who appreciate skilled craftsmanship without taking their spirits too seriously.
Windspiel and Drinks for Ocean: Protecting Our Oceans
Windspiel also supports the “1% for the Ocean” initiative. Drinks for Ocean donates one percent of its revenue to Pro Ocean. The organisation works to combat pollution in oceans and coastal areas, combining education and prevention with practical measures. Every order therefore helps fund ocean conservation. A single glass won't save the Atlantic, of course, but it does turn an enjoyable drink into a small contribution towards a worthwhile cause.
