Matilde Quadrata

The history of Matilde cigars begins in 2012 when José Seijas, General Manager of the world's largest Tabacalera, Tabacalera de Garciá, left to start something of his own. He had blended many legendary blends that continue to be successful today. With his experience, profound knowledge, and an unabated passion for cigars, he developed a new, this time, his own masterpiece. Together with his son Enrique Seijas, he created the brand Matilde as a tribute to the Dominican Republic's cigar production tradition.

La Matilda is an old Dominican brand founded in 1876 in Santiago. The original company building from that time still stands today; it is one of the city's landmarks. Matilde Renacer was introduced in 2014, followed by Matilde Renacer Oscura. In 2016, Matilde Quadrata was introduced as the third series in the USA. The subsequent Matilde Serena, although introduced as the third series in Germany, was actually presented as the fourth series in the USA.

These cigars are box-pressed, which means they are pressed into an almost square shape through appropriate pressure after rolling. Adam Kohlhase, the exclusive importer for this cigar brand, probably postponed the launch in Germany because box-pressed cigars sell slightly less well there. However, they see no obstacle and believe that José's creation will find enthusiastic lovers. The wrapper is a dark Sungrown (in the USA, a so-called "H") from Ecuador. The binder is Dominican, and the filler is a blend of Dominican Republic and Nicaragua tobaccos. Enrique Seijas himself describes this blend as "full-flavor, medium-plus blend." According to him, they are stronger than the "original" Matilde Renacer but milder than the Matilde Oscura.

These cigars are rolled at Tabacalera La Palma by Jochi Blanco, who also produces other fine cigars such as La Boheme, La Galera, and Aging Room cigars. José completely outsourced the production of Matilde to Jochi in December 2015. These three formats reached us for the first time in May 2019:

  • Robusto (5.25 x 50)
  • Torpedo (6 x 52)
  • Toro Bravo (6.5 x 54)
