La Capitana Cigars

The name Villiger hardly needs an introduction. For well over 100 years, this traditional Swiss family business has been active in the cigar industry. The late family patriarch Heinrich Villiger, who passed away in 2025, was undoubtedly one of the most well-known and respected European personalities in the world of cigars. The cigar brand La Capitana is a former Cuban brand that was “revitalized” by Villiger Cigars. Take note: there are two completely different lines with the same name. On the one hand, there is the version distributed by Villiger Cigars North America and produced in the Dominican Republic. On the other hand, the La Capitana cigars sold here in Europe come from Nicaragua and are in fact a complete puro. Tabacalera Villiger de Nicaragua manufactures these cigars using 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos under the direction of Master Blender Yasserth Reyes. This factory is located on the premises of Joya de Nicaragua Zigarren, who had already produced the earlier version of the now long-discontinued La Capitana cigars.

Today, the Villiger La Capitana cigars represent a modern, accessible entry into the world of premium longfiller cigars. While the name may already sound familiar to aficionados, the line has fundamentally changed: the earlier, significantly stronger version was discontinued and replaced in 2025 by this newly interpreted range. The current concept deliberately focuses on mild to medium-bodied cigars with a creamy character and balanced flavor profile – ideal for aficionados seeking a relaxed and harmonious smoking experience.

Villiger La Capitana Cigars: Reinterpretation with Nicaraguan Character

The combination of a fine Ecuador Connecticut wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a well-balanced filler creates an elegant harmony of creamy notes and subtle spice – noticeably smoother than the previous, more powerful La Capitana generation. The La Capitana Robusto, with its compact format, offers an even burn and a rounded flavor profile – perfect for an enjoyable break in everyday life. Thanks to its longer format, the La Capitana Churchill reveals a perceptible evolution of flavors and highlights the blend’s subtle nuances particularly well. Both vitolas demonstrate how successfully the new direction has been implemented and are recommended for anyone looking to discover a modern, balanced cigar with a gentler profile.
