Blackbird: From Jazz Classic to Cigar Brand
The English name for the blackbird refers to much more than just the bird, of course. Many might be familiar with the famous jazz standard "Bye Bye Blackbird", which became a true classic, especially thanks to John Coltrane. Numerous musicians have tried their hand at it over the years, from Miles Davis to Till Brönner. Additionally, the name has been used for various pop songs, ranging from the Beatles to Madness and even Linkin Park.
Enough name-dropping; it’s well-known that people like to let birds "inspire" their imagination—pardon the pun! Let the cultural theorists hold conferences on the subject!
Of Vitolas and Birds: Blackbird Cigars
What’s less well-known (so far): the boutique cigar label Blackbird from the Dominican Republic names all its vitolas after bird species. Which brings us back to the topic at hand.

But that’s not even the most exciting part. What stands out is how the brand was introduced to the German market. While importers usually rely on their own taste and instincts for the marketability of certain cigars, here the customers had the final say. Samplers were sent to selected aficionados, who then gave their feedback. The result is a selection of three unique blends, each available in two formats.
Dominican Excellence: Blackbird Cigars Reviewed
But what exactly is Blackbird? These Dominican cigars come from a relatively young brand. Founder José Santana first introduced the label in 2019 at the IPCPR. Of the six original blends, as mentioned, three made it across the Atlantic. All of them received ratings between 70 and 80 points from local testers.
The consistently positive feedback is also reflected in our customers’ reviews. How many stars do you think the Blackbirds deserve? Try them—and share your opinion!
