Blackbird Cigars

This cigar series was launched by Jonás Santana and first presented in summer 2019 at the IPCPR in Las Vegas. This modern and stylish boutique brand Blackbird Cigar Co. was initially available “only” in six different blends in the classic Robusto 5x50 format. Since then, numerous additional vitolas have been introduced. All cigars are produced at Tabacalera Blackbird Dominicana in the Dominican Republic.

Blackbird Cigar Co.: Innovative Cigar Creations from the Dominican Republic

The official importer of these Dominican cigars chose a rather unusual approach for the market launch. In autumn, samplers were tasted and rated by numerous aficionados in Germany. The three “best” or most popular blends were then initially imported and presented to us in autumn 2019. Incidentally, all cigars are named after bird species—an approach to naming that was previously unknown to us! These were initially the following three, which also represent the three strongest blends in the 6-sampler:

  • Cuco Criollo (the strongest of the six, Brazilian wrapper, Indonesian binder, and a Dominican filler)
  • Crow San Andres (the wrapper is a Mexican San Andres, the filler is a blend from Nicaragua and the USA)
  • Unkind Cubra (Brazilian Cubra wrapper, Dominican binder, and a filler blend from the USA and the Dominican Republic)

The Rising Blackbird Series: Cuco, Crow, and Unkind Conquer the Market

The Unkind received over 80% recommendations, the Crow around 79%, and the Cuco around 70% from more than 60 participating aficionados. The blends Finch, Jackdaw, and Rook were not available in Germany at launch. As always with us, all vitolas are of course also available individually—however, the colorful boxes practically invite you to purchase them as a complete set!
