Casa de Alegria Cigars: Fair, Good, Direct
The brand from Nicaragua's cigar capital, Estelí, promotes itself with the catchy slogan: Fair, Good, Direct. However, the journey of the two company leaders of Casa de Alegria initially took a few detours. CEO Maritza Molina and Master Blender Ralf Westerwick, a psychologist and a geographer, are career changers in the industry. Ralf, originally from hilly Gummersbach, is both a business associate and a friend of ours.

After modest beginnings in October 2004, Maritza and Ralf have made a name for themselves in the handmade premium longfiller segment. With Casa de Alegria – which translates to House of Joy – they pursue their passion for internationally sought-after tobacco from the Jalapa, Condega, and Estelí regions. All raw materials undergo long aging until they are mature enough to be processed into the exquisite Casa de Alegria cigars.

Beyond their love for the brown gold, the two founders place a strong emphasis on fair trade principles. Employees of the Tabacalera receive above-average wages and enjoy social security benefits far exceeding legal requirements. This idealism does not stop at their own gates: Even contract partners, such as tobacco farmers, receive above-average compensation. This commitment benefits not only the local community but also ensures that Casa de Alegria secures the best raw materials and employees.

The Edicion Limitada Rico offers medium-bodied cigars with earthy-spicy notes and roasted aromas. All tobaccos are fermented for at least twelve months. Roasted aromas are also characteristic of the Edicion Limitada Suave, though it is significantly milder and creamier. It contains a lower proportion of the rich Ligero and Viso tobaccos and features a refined Connecticut wrapper.

Casa de Alegria also has something for pipe smokers: Instead of using cigar trimmings to produce shortfillers, the binder and wrapper leaves are removed, and the filler is cut into a Wild Cut. This results in a true cigar tobacco – for the pipe! A must-try!
