Pipe Care for a Long Service Life
Over the course of its life, a pipe has to put up with quite a lot. That sounds worse than it actually is. But of course, sooner or later a pipe will show signs of use. The good news: there is a lot you can do yourself.
Scraping the Pipe Bowl and Reducing the Carbon Layer
From time to time, you should give your pipe a thorough scraping. A layer of carbon builds up inside the pipe bowl. This gradually reduces the size of the tobacco chamber, ultimately having a negative effect on draw and flavor. Incidentally, this layer builds up more quickly with sweet tobaccos.
Pipe Reamer for Cleaning the Pipe Bowl
When removing this layer, proceed carefully and leave a protective layer of 0.5 to 0.8 mm. A particularly suitable tool for this is a pipe reamer. Its diameter can be adjusted, allowing it to be perfectly adapted to the respective pipe bowl. Suitable models are available from brands including Dunhill and Savinelli.
Pipe Polish for Bowl and Mouthpiece
Both manufacturers also offer polishes that restore the shine of your pipe bowl or mouthpiece. This is particularly important for the pipe bowl, which becomes dull over time, but less so for the mouthpiece. Only mouthpieces made of vulcanite require special care, however, and this material is less common today as most mouthpieces are made of acrylic.
