Warped: Bestseller
Warped: All items
Cigars from Warped combine Cuban-inspired craftsmanship with the ideas of American founder Kyle Gellis. Their flavor profiles range from wood and spice to creamy, nutty and sweet notes. Many of the blends are based on Nicaraguan tobaccos, with each series offering its own distinct characteristics. The sizes vary as well: the slender La Relatos is part of the range, alongside the Gran Reserva 1988 in a Robusto format.
Warped: Kyle Gellis and the Early Years
Warped lists 2007 as its founding year. Gellis developed his interest in cigars through his father, who introduced him to different tobaccos and flavor profiles. During his college years, he regularly visited Little Havana in Miami. There, he found a production partner in El Titan de Bronze and deepened his knowledge of cigar production and blending. Gellis develops the blends himself. His first contact with CIGARWORLD came in 2016 at the IPCPR cigar trade show in Las Vegas, leading to a partnership for the German market.
Tobaccos from Aganorsa
One important production partner is the Tabacos Valle de Jalapa factory, known as TABSA, in Estelí, one of the most important production centers for cigars from Nicaragua. Several series are produced here using tobaccos from the Nicaraguan tobacco grower Aganorsa. Corojo 99 and Criollo 98 are frequently used. All Warped cigars available at CIGARWORLD are handmade longfillers, meaning their filler consists of whole tobacco leaves. La Hacienda, Maestro del Tiempo and Gran Reserva 1988 are Nicaraguan puros, with wrappers, binders and fillers all originating from Nicaragua. Other blends incorporate tobaccos from additional countries.
Cigar Comparison: La Hacienda and Maestro del Tiempo
La Hacienda revives the name of a historic Cuban cigar brand. The modern blend is produced in Nicaragua and features a Corojo 99 wrapper from Jalapa. In his tasting notes, Gellis mentions earth, leather, pistachio and citrus, among other flavors.
For Maestro del Tiempo, on the other hand, he describes cedar, creamy notes, vanilla and walnut. The name means "Master of Time" and refers to the blend's development over several years. Available sizes include the slender 5205 Lonsdale and the shorter 5712 Petit Robusto.
Nicaraguan Puros from Warped: Futuro & Flor del Valle
Kyle Gellis and Max Fernandez of Aganorsa worked together to develop the blend for Futuro. The series consists entirely of Nicaraguan tobaccos. Our tasting notes describe wood and pepper at first, followed by creamy and sweet flavors. Flor del Valle was introduced back in 2014 and is also a Nicaraguan puro. Its wrapper is a Corojo 99 from Jalapa. The Cristales measures 15.24 centimeters in length with a ring gauge of 42, making it one of the slimmer cigars in the range.
Top-Rated Cigars: Gran Reserva 1988 and La Relatos
The name Gran Reserva 1988 has a personal connection: the year refers to the founder's birth year. The Robusto is produced at TABSA using Nicaraguan tobaccos. Its flavor profile is dominated by wood, leather, chocolate and cocoa, while Cigar Aficionado also mentions coffee and malty chocolate. The magazine awarded this exact size 95 points and ranked it third in its Top 25 Cigars of 2019.
Introduced in 2018, La Relatos is based on a blend from the brand's early history. The La Relatos H. features an Ecuadorian wrapper, while the binder and filler come from Nicaragua. The filler combines Corojo 99 and Criollo 98. Measuring six inches in length with a ring gauge of 38, it is 15.24 centimeters long and approximately 1.51 centimeters in diameter. This sets it apart from the Nicaraguan puros described above, both in its proportions and in the origin of its wrapper.
Warped Cigars: Every Series Has Its Own Story
At Warped, there is often more behind a cigar series than just a new tobacco blend. La Hacienda revives a historic Cuban brand name, Futuro was developed in collaboration with Max Fernandez, and Gran Reserva 1988 even carries Kyle Gellis' birth year in its name. These personal connections run throughout Warped's history. They show how closely the development of each cigar is tied to the ideas and experiences of its founder.
