Alonso Menendez
Alonso Menendez is internationally renowned as the founder of the Cuban brands Montecristo and H. Upmann. After emigrating from Cuba in the 1960s, his son, Felix Menendez, established the Menendez-Amerino tobacco plantation near Salvador, Brazil.
Flavor Diversity of Menendez Cigars: From Savory to Earthy
In our opinion, Brazilian cigars are significantly underrated. While the tobaccos from Bahia may not be as strong as their Cuban counterparts, they offer considerable complexity and substantial body, making them highly appealing. Always smooth and enjoyable in taste, these affordable cigars from Brazil delight many aficionados with their savory and earthy notes. The nearly black wrapper comes from Brazil’s finest growing region, Mata Fina, while the other tobaccos used for the binder and filler come from different parts of the country. This makes the Menendez a Brazilian puro, meaning it is made exclusively from 100% Brazilian tobacco.
Best Value for Money: Discover Brazilian Cigars
The main issue Brazilian cigars face in Germany is a 28% import duty, which significantly increases their retail price. This duty does not apply to cigars from other Central American countries like Nicaragua, Honduras, or the Dominican Republic. All the more surprising, then, that Alonso Menendez cigars are still so affordable in Germany. The German importer Kopp Tobaccos must have done some very precise calculations—thanks for that!
For us, these cigars clearly offer the best value for money among products from this country of origin. As alternatives, we recommend the Regalia Fina cigars as longfillers, or in the shortfiller category, the Brasil Trüllerie, both distributed in Germany by August Schuster.
