Carlos & Maria Amorio

These cigars are a series by the Freud Cigar Company, which was founded in 2022. Sigmund Freud is the founder of psychoanalysis and was one of the most influential thinkers of the nineteenth century. His portrait holding a cigar, photographed slightly from the side, is one of his most famous images. He was an avowed cigar enthusiast and is said to have smoked around 20 cigars a day, which he sometimes referred to as “displaced masturbation.” Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but he was chosen as the namesake for this venture because the connection to cigars immediately comes to mind for almost everyone when they hear the name.

He is also credited with the quote “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” which I would immediately agree with. Sometimes a lit cigar during an engaging conversation is simply a burning bundle of leaves and not the center of attention. Speaking of center of attention—let’s return to the cigars presented here! The brand is backed by David Stadnyk and Luis Torres. Torres previously served as CEO of the retail and cigar lounge chain Casa de Montecristo in the USA. During our visits to the United States, we have been to many of these stores; they are the major competitors to the Cigars International Super Stores of the Danish group STG.

Tabacalera El Maestro & William Ventura: Quality From the Dominican Republic

The Carlos & Maria Amorio cigars somewhat conceal their origin; there is hardly any indication on the boxes of the Freud Cigar Company, which in turn belongs to Agape Lifestyle Inc. The plan is likely to expand the brand into other areas in the future, such as spirits. They are produced in the Dominican Republic by Wiber Ventura at his Tabacalera El Maestro, which is considered a smaller secondary factory of Tabacalera William Ventura. The wrapper is a dark leaf from Ecuador, the binder is a Sumatra from Indonesia. The filler consists of a Nicaraguan Seco, a Viso from Ecuador, as well as a Dominican San Vicente Ligero and a Viso Criollo 98.

Other series from Tabacalera William Ventura include, for example, the Robert Caldwell cigars. I’m now lighting up a Robusto—let’s see how this (warning: pun intended) foreplay to its sister cigar, the Carlos & Maria Limited Edition Orgasmo, tastes. The first impression is very good; the cigar is firm and tightly rolled, with a slightly glossy, (positively meant) oily sheen. During the first draws, a subtle, pleasant creaminess develops, which continues into the final third. The Amorio Robusto never becomes truly strong, but it remains broad, complex, and engaging throughout. This is a cigar I would happily light up again anytime—price aside!
