Caldwell: Cigars of a Visionary

Robert Caldwell's fascination with cigars began at an early age. He was reportedly no older than twelve when he hid in a treehouse to try his first cigar. Naturally, he was caught by his sister's husband, who sought to break him of this bad habit in the old-fashioned way. His brother-in-law took him to the factory of Ernesto Perez Carillo, intending to scare him off with an especially strong cigar to discourage any further experiments.

Exclusive Partnerships

However, the plan backfired, as Robert greatly enjoyed the cigar, and the incident only deepened his desire for more. Years later, Robert, together with a business partner, began supplying hotels and restaurants with premium cigars. Time and again, they received inquiries about private labels.

Caldwell Eastern Standard: Exotic Blends by Robert Caldwell

So, the enterprising businessman traveled to Central America to learn about the production process firsthand. He quickly noticed many extraordinarily high-quality, long-aged, or rare tobaccos that were being overlooked. These gems went unnoticed because their quantities were insufficient for large-scale production—not even for the limited editions of the big manufacturers.

Robert Caldwell and Christian Eiroa

These tobaccos became the foundation for Robert's first blends. One of the first to recognize their potential, he teamed up with Christian Eiroa, who had reentered the market with Tabacaleras Fabricas Unidas after selling his brand Camacho to the Oettinger Davidoff Group. Together, they produced cigars named Wynnwood Cigars, inspired by a district in Miami known for its art exhibitions and galleries. It remains a "hip" area of the Florida metropolis.

The Cigar Highlights of Caldwell

In 2014, Robert ended the partnership to establish his own brand, Robert Caldwell. The cigars for his brand were initially produced by the Ventura family in their Tabacalera William Ventura. Just a year later, he began building his own factory, and since the summer of 2015, most of his blends have been crafted there. One of his most famous lines, Blind Man's Bluff, is intriguingly produced at a factory owned by the Oettinger Davidoff Group—Agroindustrias Laepe S.A. in Honduras—the same factory where Davidoff's Camachos are made.
