Casa de Garcia Maduro
The name of these cigars Casa de Garcia Maduro refers to the tabacalera where they are rolled. The Tabacalera de Garcia Cigar Factory was founded in 1971 by Pepe Garcia and is located in the city of La Romana in the south of the Dominican Republic. Garcia belonged to the Menendez family, which owned the cigar manufacturer H. Upmann in Cuba until the family fled the Cuban Revolution.
The History Behind Casa de Garcia Maduro Cigars
It used to belong to the Imperial Tobacco group, which also included the cigar manufacturer Altadis (formerly General Cigars) and, for example, the US cigar mail-order company JR Cigars. For us Europeans, it may be more interesting that Imperial also held a 50% stake in Habanos S.A., the distribution organization for Cuban cigars. This came about because Imperial Tobacco acquired Altadis in 2008, which itself had previously emerged from the merger of the French SEITA and the Spanish TABACALERA. In 2020, Imperial Tobacco completely divested its cigar business and now focuses exclusively on tobacco-free products. The buyer is a shell company from Hong Kong, reportedly backed by three wealthy Chinese citizens. One initial effect of this sale is the change in distribution of the Vegafina cigars (also produced at the Tabacalera Garcia) from Villiger to 5th Avenue, in which this shell company holds a 51% stake. In January 2024, distribution of the Honduran Flor de Copan cigars was also transferred from Kopp Tobaccos to 5th Avenue. Let’s see whether the Casa de Garcia cigars will eventually “move” there as well...
Casa de Garcia Maduro: A Dark Masterpiece of the Tabacalera de Garcia
This Maduro variant is the second line of these very affordable bundles from the Dominican Republic. The Casa de Garcia Connecticut Bundles, first introduced in Germany in 2012, have since become one of our bestsellers.
The Casa de Garcia Maduro cigars are made with a Connecticut Broadleaf as both the wrapper and the binder. The filler consists of Dominican and Honduran tobaccos. These cigars, which mainly deliver chocolatey flavors with hints of coffee, are sure to be just as popular as their lighter “sisters”!
