Corrida Dominican Republic
The “yellow” Corrida Cigars are the milder of the two lines initially introduced in May 2017 by the importer Villiger Cigars. The Spanish word “corrida” literally translates to “run”; however, in this context, “bullfight” is the more fitting meaning, as a bull is also depicted in the logo.
Many aficionados likely had similar associations when they first saw the logo and branding of Corrida Cigars: several years ago, cigar manufacturer Davidoff relaunched the brand Camacho, which had previously been acquired from Christian Eiroa. At the time, the design—with its scorpion and bold, vibrant colors—was visually revolutionary.
Corrida Dominican Republic: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
About two years later, Black Lion by La Aurora followed suit, and several lines from Carlos Torano were also given a similarly styled overall concept. Now Villiger has its own “Camacho”! The use of the two dominant colors of the aforementioned brands—bright yellow and vivid red—is simply too striking to ignore the resemblance. Of course, the importers and the cigars themselves are entirely unrelated.
Following the scorpion and the lion, a bull now symbolizes the strength and untamed character of the blend. The claim reads “Anything but gentle”—in other words, anything but mild. These cigars are produced in the Dominican Republic. The wrapper is a so-called “desflorado” from Ecuador, where the flowers of the tobacco plant are removed so that more energy flows into the leaves rather than being “wasted” on the short-lived bloom—almost a philosophical approach, one might say. The Spanish term desflorado also carries the meaning of “deflowered,” which can lead to some unusual results when searching online. The binder is an Indonesian Besuki, while the filler blend consists exclusively of Dominican tobaccos: Santo Domingo, Piloto, and Olor.
The Yellow Corrida Cigars: Mild Enjoyment with Ecuadorian Flair
As a result, these two vitolas are significantly milder than their Honduran (red) counterparts, the Corrida Honduras Cigars. The importer describes a naturally spicy sweetness in these Dominican cigars. Currently, two vitolas are available: a thick Robusto+ (5x56) and an almost classic Toro+ with a 52 ring gauge and a length of 6 inches. In April 2018, the blue Nicaragua and the green Brazil lines were also introduced, bringing the total to four different lines of Corrida Cigars.
