Davidoff Grand Cru
The original five formats (No. 1 to No. 5) of this line were the very cigars that Zino Davidoff introduced under his own name in 1946. The series was originally called “Chateaux”, with each cigar named after a famous winery from the Bordeaux region. Then as now, these five cigars are rich in both aroma and flavor. When Davidoff ended its partnership with Habanos in the early 1990s, these five vitolas were continued by the Cubans as the Le Hoyo Series within the Hoyo de Monterrey brand. Zino later “refined” them and reintroduced them under his own name.
Davidoff Grand Cru: Tradition and Excellence in Every Format
Apart from the newer lines Aniversario & Special and Millennium Blend, these Davidoff Grand Cru cigars are among the strongest offerings by Hendrik Kelner under the Davidoff name. After the shift away from Cuba in 1990/1991 and the relocation of production to the Dominican Republic, the series was renamed “Grand Cru”. In 2017, the entire range was revised—primarily due to packaging requirements and warning labels mandated by the EU’s TPD2 directive. As part of this update, the No. 1 and No. 4 formats were discontinued, while Toro and Robusto vitolas were introduced. Apparently, counting to five proved a bit too complicated for some aficionados—so more intuitive format names made a comeback… ????
