Davidoff Yamasa

This third new line of the “New World initiative” was introduced in 2016 at InterTabac in Dortmund, after being presented to the global audience a few weeks earlier at the IPCPR in Las Vegas. Following the Nicaraguan Davidoff cigars in 2014 and the Brazilian Davidoff Escurio cigars in 2015, the focus returned to the brand’s “home country,” the Dominican Republic—this time highlighting a very special region on the island of Hispaniola.

Davidoff Yamasa: A Masterpiece from the Dominican Yamasa Region

Yamasa is a region that was initially considered inhospitable to tobacco cultivation. However, the intuition of master blender Henke Kelner suggested that this was precisely the place to grow tobacco capable of producing exceptional cigars. Over a period of 20 years, the soil was intensively cultivated—by manually adding nitrate and calcium to each plant, for example—and from 30 potential varieties, three were ultimately selected for use in this series. The original 100 hectares were also reduced to the best 21 in order to achieve truly outstanding results.

The tobaccos for this line are grown under shade and processed in entirely new, state-of-the-art curing barns. The wrapper and binder are both Dominican Yamasa. The filler blend consists of Dominican Piloto Seco and Mejorado Visus, as well as Nicaraguan Condega and Estelí. In terms of flavor, the profile leans strongly toward earthy and woody notes, yet still carries the brand’s signature slightly “musty” floral-herbal character typical of Davidoff.

The Davidoff Puro d'Oro, discontinued around 2015/2016, was also rolled with a Yamasa wrapper, making it reasonable to view this line as a kind of successor to those now discontinued cigars.
