With the Matilde Special Edition Toro, Enrique Seijas has created a very personal tribute to his father José. This limited cigar is not only a homage to one of the most influential master blenders of the Dominican Republic, but also a handcrafted masterpiece. Produced at the renowned Tabacalera La Isla in Santiago de los Caballeros, it combines tradition, innovation, and a palpable emotional depth. The blend is exceptional: an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper encloses a Nicaraguan binder and a filler composed of tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and – for the first time in a Matilde cigar – Peru. This combination gives the cigar a multi-layered, creamy-spicy flavor profile with subtle sweetness and earthy undertones.

Father, Inspiration, and Legacy – The Story Behind the Matilde Special Edition

The Matilde Special Edition Toro is deeply rooted in the history of the Seijas family. Enrique drew direct inspiration for this blend from his father, who had a particular fondness for Peruvian tobacco. For over three decades, José Seijas shaped the operations of the Tabacalera de García – the largest premium cigar factory in the world – and was instrumental in the creation of many iconic brands such as the Dominican Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, and VegaFina. After stepping back from active management, he co-founded the Matilde Cigar Company in 2013 with his son – a passion project that stands for dedication, precision, and family continuity. The Special Edition Toro was released just a few weeks before his death in November 2024 – a legacy of an era of Dominican cigar artistry. The Matilde Special Edition Toro is offered in a 6 x 50 (Toro) format and limited to around 5,000 cigars. Each of these Dominican cigars embodies the spirit of craftsmanship and dedication that defined José Seijas. When smoked, it reveals notes of roasted coffee, nuts, and dark chocolate, accompanied by a subtle spice that gradually builds in intensity. Packaged in boxes of 24 – though, as always, also available individually – it is aimed at aficionados seeking something truly special: a cigar with history, soul, and exceptional balance. Ideal for connoisseurs who value authenticity and associate the Seijas name with respect and passion. The sample I smoked brought me great enjoyment and was a perfectly constructed companion for around 90 minutes – complex and highly engaging in flavor.
