A.J. Fernandez Amar

The AJ Fernandez Amar is a Nicaraguan puro, meaning that the wrapper, binder, and filler all come entirely from Nicaragua. The tobacco variety used for the wrapper is an “H.”, which, for familiar reasons, we once again aren’t allowed to spell out. Embargo and all that, you know the drill. In terms of flavor, the series sits in the medium-bodied range, combining earthy and woody notes with spice, a subtle sweetness, and light citrus nuances. Amar thus displays a typically Nicaraguan core character without relying solely on strength. I sampled one at the trade show when it was first presented and treated myself to another Robusto while writing this text. Happily, this latest cigar confirmed my positive first impression! It has something “rich and oily” about it that is right up my alley, without actually being particularly strong – very nice indeed!

AJ Fernandez Amar: a New Series from Nicaragua

The story behind these cigars and their name is quite fascinating. In March 2025, part of AJ Fernandez’s cigar factory in Esteli burned down due to a short circuit. The solidarity and support AJ subsequently received from other cigar manufacturers inspired him to express his gratitude through this line. Accordingly, the back of the band bears the words: Gold is tested by Fire. The name also reflects this idea: “Amar” means “to love” in Spanish and “moon” in Arabic. In this way, AJ references his Cuban and Lebanese roots. This Middle Eastern connection is also hinted at in the visual design of the cigar band. The Amar cigars are made at the San Lotano factory in Ocotál.

Four AJ Fernandez Amar Formats

The series comprises four vitolas with different proportions, although only two have made their way to us so far. The Amar Robusto measures 5 1/2 x 54 and showcases the blend in a comparatively compact format, while the Toro, at 6 x 56, combines a larger ring gauge with a classic Toro length. Regardless of the format, the blend remains the same: a Nicaraguan H. wrapper with binder and filler from Nicaragua. For us, this is a very successful addition to his portfolio and definitely one of the cigars from Nicaragua that you should try!
