Black Label Trading Company: Unique Design and Flavor

It’s the distinctive packaging that immediately caught the eye of importer Martina Kleinlagel. There’s truly nothing like it. With two-tone motifs of skulls, animal bones, or even Dürer’s praying hands with tattooed finger joints – anything but ordinary – Black Label Trading Company stands out. Martina Kleinlagel couldn’t just pass by when she discovered these boxes at the IPCPR 2019. Thanks to that moment, these cigars are now available in Germany.

An American Couple

The company is led by a couple from the United States. Angela and James Brown originally hail from Texas, before their wedding inspired them to explore the wider world. On their long journey, they eventually reached Nicaragua, where they found a livelihood organizing off-road tours. That was their entry into the land of volcanoes, and after appreciating its natural beauty, they soon discovered its cultural heritage as well: they became aficionados and started crafting their own cigars.

Tabacalera Oveja Negra and Black Label Trading Company

Black Label Trading Company manufactures its cigars in its own factory, Tabacalera Oveja Negra. This translates to “the black sheep” in English and humorously alludes to the company’s underdog mentality. Despite its modest budget, the small firm has won over a loyal fan base with its remarkable attention to detail. In addition to stunning designs, the company impresses with its meticulous craftsmanship and top-quality boutique cigars.

James is the creative mind behind the designs. A reserved and introverted type, he comes up with all the artwork and cigar band concepts. Angela, on the other hand, oversees social media marketing. Black Label Trading Company is known for its strong blends, featuring rich tobaccos, predominantly from Nicaragua. These cigars are not ideal for beginners, and – as their bold imagery suggests – they’re far from being mild breakfast cigars.

The brand debuted on the US market back in 2013 with four initial lines: Lawless, Salvation, Royalty, and Last Rites. The blend of the highly successful Last Rites later inspired an enticing evolution called Viaticum. We highly recommend the bold Morph and the Super Deluxe, a strictly limited special edition. Recently, additional exciting lines have been introduced, including the Nicaraguan powerhouse Orthodox, the relatively mild Deliverance, and Santa Muerte, which dazzles with its spectacular artwork.

Under the partner brand Black Works Studio, we’ve grouped all the lines that didn’t quite fit elsewhere. This collection of unique and intriguing cigars includes mysterious names like Killer Bee and Hyena.
