Brun del Ré Cigars: Boundless Enjoyment
As with many cigars, Brun del Ré carries a story of emigration. However, this one is different. It doesn’t center around a historical figure whose image is only known from oil paintings but takes place in our modern era—or at least the 1990s, if you still consider those recent. After all, the heyday of Tamagotchis and lower-back tattoos is long behind us.
“The Switzerland of Central America”
In the 1990s, Carlo Corazza, a Swiss man with Italian roots, set off for Costa Rica, a country often nicknamed “The Switzerland of Central America.” This name may stem from Costa Rica’s choice to forego a military, instead investing in the education of its youth.

Otherwise, this country situated between Nicaragua and Panama stays out of many issues such as drug-related crime or political instability, both of which are prevalent in neighboring nations. Instead, Costa Rica prioritizes freedom of speech, human rights, and eco-tourism. This business model works splendidly for a country that has protected large parts of its breathtaking flora and fauna.
The Rise of Brun del Ré
Returning to Carlo Corazza: He initially tried other indulgences, such as trading wine and chocolate, but success eluded him. Everything changed with tobacco. Today, his cigars are particularly popular in Switzerland (the European one, not the Central American one), and the brand is steadily gaining fans elsewhere. This is no surprise, as Brun del Ré represents premium-quality longfillers. Masterful blenders with exceptional expertise and skilled rollers ensure superb craftsmanship. Typical of Brun del Ré is its balanced flavor and mild to medium strength.
Rainforest Foundation
The tobaccos, of course, originate from Costa Rica, but also from other Caribbean countries like Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Indonesia. An exception is the Rainforest 1787, an intensely flavorful puro from Costa Rica that reflects its origins in a special way: 20% of its revenue is donated to the Rainforest Foundation, which works to preserve the forest. The bands of various formats feature native wildlife.
An Overview of Brun del Ré Series
The Premium series is ideal for beginners or those who enjoy a mild cigar from time to time. Gold, with its refined characteristics, is better suited for experienced smokers, while Colonial is the strongest of the three.

For a quick smoke during a short break, Brun del Ré offers the perfect cigar: With the Piccolo, you’ll experience full enjoyment with a relatively short smoking duration. For fans of flavored tobaccos, BDR offers a range of different flavors.
Limited Treasures and Mild Enjoyment
For special occasions, Carlo Corazza often introduces limited editions. For example, the Limitada 1638 commemorates the year Costa Rica first exported tobacco. Incidentally, tobacco had already been grown in the country before, but the entire harvest was used domestically. The Bicentario, blended in 2021 to celebrate Costa Rica’s 200th anniversary, is another highlight. As befitting such a peaceful nation, Costa Rica didn’t engage in a bloody war of independence against Spain; instead, they simply formed a state, and the Spaniards left. Costa Rica truly is a unique country, and its cigars, like those of Brun del Ré, showcase this distinctiveness.
