Sun-Cured Tobacco: The Oriental, Sweet Tobacco
Sun-Cured Tobacco: The Oriental, Sweet Tobacco
When it comes to drying tobacco leaves, four methods have stood the test of time over the centuries. One of these is called “sun cured,” which refers to drying the leaves using the power of the sun. It is one of the most natural ways to remove moisture from tobacco. Advocates of this method particularly value the unique aromas that develop under sunlight, as these cannot be achieved through any other drying process. Sun-cured tobacco is characterized by its particularly smooth and sweet flavor, which is highly appreciated in countries like Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, and other Mediterranean regions. Additionally, the so-called “White Snuff” from India is also made using sun-cured tobacco. This especially dry and fine snuff tobacco is primarily known for its strength.
Directly in the Sun, Under Open Skies
Unlike conventional air curing, sun-cured tobacco is not placed in a barn but left out in the open air so the sun can do its work. Traditionally, the tobacco is tied to special wooden frames for this purpose, where it remains for about 12 to 30 days. The exact duration depends heavily on the philosophy of the cigar producer. The method and duration of drying have a significant impact on the flavor of a cigar – allowing cigar makers to imprint their unique signature on their tobacco. The slow and gentle oxidation ensures a controlled and optimal fermentation process, which naturally breaks down proteins, sugars, and starches. Carotenoids – natural plant pigments – are also gradually eliminated from the tobacco leaves. These pigments typically give the leaf a yellowish-red tint, which is undesirable in cigars. After about two weeks, sun-cured tobacco reaches a moisture content of around 16 to 17 percent, an optimal level for subsequent processing steps.
The Sun-Cured Aroma
Tobacco leaves dried under the concentrated power of the sun develop a particularly sweet note and are remarkably smooth in taste. The nicotine content is significantly lower compared to other drying methods. This is why sun-cured tobacco is widely used in the cigarette industry. Sun-dried tobacco offers flavor profiles with notes of tea, sweet spices, and fruit. Floral nuances are also not uncommon in this type of tobacco, contributing to its distinct oriental character.
