Arturo Fuente Hemingway
The writer and cigar aficionado Ernest Hemingway lends his name to a very special “masterpiece” from the house of Arturo Fuente. After trademark-related issues, the importer Kohlhase & Kopp has finally succeeded in bringing the Arturo Fuente Hemingway cigars line back to Germany. As always, only truly perfectly rolled cigars leave this cigar manufactory; this time even in the highly demanding handcrafted “Perfecto formats” (irregular pointed shapes). These specialties were very popular in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and had nearly disappeared. In 1980, when the family arrived in the Dominican Republic, Carlos Fuente Jr. revived these vitolas (formats). His goal was to bring back the style of earlier times, keeping the art, tradition, and craftsmanship alive.
Arturo Fuente Hemingway: Unique Cigar Craftsmanship in Perfecto Formats
A very aromatic blend of Dominican tobaccos for the filler (binder) and binder is wrapped in an African wrapper from Cameroon. In terms of flavor, these are medium-bodied cigars with subtle coffee and chocolate notes, consistently offering an excellent and cool draw.
As with all Arturo Fuente cigars (except the “Chateau” series), Carlos Fuente Jr. (Carlito) personally decided in the 1990s to use the spicier, fuller wrapper from Central Africa. In his opinion, it harmonizes much better with the tobaccos in the filler blend. All Fuente cigars are, by Dominican standards, rather rich and full of character, which is partly due to the use of at least four different types of tobacco in the filler. The Fuentes benefit from their personal and close ties to the Meerapfel family, the world’s leading supplier of this special wrapper. These leaves are rare due to the unstable political situation in the Central African Republic, the best growing region. This instability makes long-term planning and structured tobacco cultivation difficult.
The Revival of Traditional Cigar Styles by Carlos Fuente Jr.
Since 1912, the family led by Carlos Fuente—namesake of the well-known “Don Carlos” cigar—has been producing cigars. The Fuentes are world-renowned for their exceptional quality and innovative spirit in tobacco cultivation and processing. In the United States, Arturo Fuente cigars are among the most popular brands. The Hemingway series in particular, which is rarely available in Germany, along with the Opus X cigars, helped establish this brand’s legendary reputation.
