Arturo Fuente Opus X The Lost City

The Toro was awarded “Brilliant” by the European Cigar Cult Journal (ECCJ) in 2009! ECCJ writes: “This is a very well-rolled cigar with outstanding cedar-like roasted aromas, strongly supported by a hint of exotic fruits.” The texture of the Fuente Fuente OpusX The Lost City is creamy, and despite its strong flavors, it is mild and easy to smoke.

Fuente Fuente OpusX The Lost City: An Extraordinary Cigar with a Hollywood Story

The Lost City – the story behind the Fuente Fuente OpusX The Lost City cigar is so improbable and complex that it seems like the work of a Hollywood screenwriter. In fact, the idea for the cigar emerged during the production of a Hollywood film: The Lost City, a 16-year project by actor and director Andy Garcia.

When Garcia began filming the story about the struggle of a Cuban family during the Castro revolution, he received invaluable help from the legendary cigar maker Carlito Fuente. Their collaboration led to the almost accidental birth of one of the rarest and most extraordinary cigars in the world. The film “The Lost City” portrays the passions and conflicts of a Cuban family torn apart by the revolution. Garcia plays nightclub owner Fellove Fico, who is under enormous pressure from both politicians and gangsters.

The most poignant scene occurs when Fico’s brother Ricardo, a high-ranking official of the new Castro regime, visits their uncle Donoso on his farm to inform him that the regime will confiscate his tobacco farm. Donoso, unable to control his disappointment and anger toward Ricardo, suffers a heart attack and dies on his own property, after which Ricardo commits suicide shortly thereafter.

“During location scouting, I was introduced to Carlito Fuente. I explained to him what I was trying to do and asked about the possibility of shooting this sequence on his farm in the Dominican Republic. We share a common culture, so he was immediately supportive.”

The Connection Between Cinema and Cigar Craft: The Creation of OpusX The Lost City

Garcia had originally intended to shoot the scene in a studio and use the tobacco farm only for establishing shots. Carlito Fuente responded with a generous offer: he would plant a few acres of tobacco immediately after the harvest so that Garcia would have a field of three-meter-high plants to film in June. The field of tobacco leaves proved to be the perfect backdrop for the film and an accurate and moving depiction of what happened to Cuban cigars.

After filming, Garcia asked Carlito what he planned to do with the tobacco. He said that if the tobacco turned out well, he would use it. Garcia suggested making a cigar with The Lost City logo and that the project should benefit his foundation: “Cigar Family Charitable Foundation”, which provides educational and healthcare services in the Dominican Republic. After five years of careful aging, the summer-grown tobacco proved to be excellent: the leaves display the full complexity of the famous original Fuente Fuente OpusX wrapper leaves, yet with a unique character of their own.

Fuente OpusX The Lost City is a distinctive experience for any aficionado. Garcia said about the project: “It’s about helping poor children in the Dominican Republic and about my longing for the time Carlito and I spent together. He not only supported us financially for the scene in the fields, but also introduced me to the President of the Dominican Republic, who allowed us to film in and around the presidential palace. The film could not have been made without Carlito’s help.”

Fuente Fuente OpusX The Lost City truly tells its own story: a partnership between two artists whose passion for their craft resulted in both a compelling film and the creation of a remarkable cigar. In autumn 2009, the Fuente Fuente OpusX The Lost City was released worldwide.
