Flor de Copan Clasica

The Clasica cigars from Flor de Copan are among the best-selling Honduran cigars in Germany, despite being virtually unknown across the Atlantic in the United States. The reason is simple: this cigar brand is not sold in the U.S. The name refers to the factory where they are made—the Tabacalera is called Flor de Copan and is located in the city of Santa Rosa de Copan in Honduras, near the border with El Salvador and Guatemala.

Santa Rosa de Copan: Origin of Flor de Copan Cigars

The city of Copán is world-famous for the Ruins of Copán, an important archaeological site of the Maya. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is characterized by excellently preserved sculptures, pyramids, and temples. During our visit to the factory of Pia Maria Selva in spring 2025 in Danlí (Villa Zamorano Cigars), we were fortunate enough to make a little "side trip" (about 12 hours drive!) to see these ruins up close. As cigar smokers, the Altar Q was especially interesting to us, depicting the 16 rulers of Copán and having entered the cigar industry in the form of the Altar Q Cigars by Oscar Valladares.

Flor de Copan: A Honduran Jewel in Germany

Due to the U.S. embargo on Cuba and the associated trademark disputes, it is believed that cigars from this brand are sold in the U.S. under a different name and simply re-labeled for the European market. There are many examples of blends tailored for the U.S. market that have been adjusted this way to comply with local regulations. Regardless, these cigars are highly successful in Europe, particularly in Germany. One reason for this is that each individual cigar is wrapped in a cedarwood sheet before being placed in a cellophane sleeve. Additionally, the red-and-white wooden boxes containing 20 cigars each are visually appealing due to their striking design, making them easy to spot in any walk-in humidor.

The Variety of Flor de Copan Cigars: From Classic to Maduro

This cigar line combines tobaccos from various growing regions. The wrapper is a Connecticut leaf grown in Ecuador, while the binder comes from the brand’s home country, Honduras. The filler is a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. In terms of strength, the Flor de Copán is blended to be very mild. Here in the Cigarworld Lounge, we consider it a typical beginner's cigar—what we sometimes call a cigar that “doesn’t hurt.” Its flavor is noticeably creamy, with a hint of sweetness, entirely free of pepperiness or heaviness.

In addition to the Classic Series presented here, there are also the Flor de Copan Maduro (even more aromatic and sweeter) and the Flor de Copan Linea Puros (considerably stronger, with earthy and peppery notes!).
