Artista Cigars Rugged Country

The cigars bearing the name Cimarron are produced at Tabacalera Artista Cigars in Tamboril in the Dominican Republic. The factory was founded over 60 years ago as Tabacalera Puros Cibao by Ramon "Pulita" Rodriguez. Today, his grandson, Radhames "Ram" Rodriguez, runs the business. The first lines he introduced to the German market in 2017 were the Exactus cigars.

Cimarron Cigars: A Masterpiece From Tabacalera Artista Cigars

In Ram’s view, the torcedores and everyone else involved in cigar production are artists – which is why the factory was renamed Tabacalera El Artista in 1995. In addition to his own lines, Ram has been producing cigars on a contract basis for major names in the industry for decades. During our second meeting in Dortmund in 2018 at Inter Tabac, he told us about the enormous quantities of cigars he had just shipped to a major US online retailer. We believe that, as with Plasencia Cigars, there has been a growing realization in recent years that contract manufacturers eventually become interchangeable and “bleed out” in fierce price competition.

Tabacalera Artista Cigars: Tradition and Innovation in Cigar Production

His ability to blend and produce cigars is also evident in the success of cigars rolled at his factory, such as Big Papi by David Ortiz (a famous former baseball player in the USA). The blend is said to be very similar to the Colorado blend. The factory is known for its own tobacco cultivations. Various hybrids, such as T13, are developed and used, among others, for the Cimarron cigars.

  • The Connecticut features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, a Dominican Negrito binder, and fillers from Colombia, the Dominican Republic (Corojo Viso and T13 Viso), as well as a US Broadleaf in the filler.
  • The Maduro is quite similar in composition: a Mexican San Andres wrapper over the same Negrito binder and similar tobaccos from Colombia, the Dominican Republic (Corojo Viso and T13 Ligero), along with a US Broadleaf. The only change is that T13 Viso is replaced by T13 Ligero.
  • The Colorado uses a Claro wrapper from Ecuador, a Criollo 98 from the Dominican Republic underneath, and a filler made from Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos (the blend is identical to the Big Papi cigar of US baseball star David Ortiz).
