DBL Extra Viejo

The name of this cigar line is an acronym formed from the initials of Dominican Big Leaguer. The term Big League or Major League refers to the highest division in a sport. Most people associate it with Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States. A Big Leaguer, therefore, is someone who is a true expert or a genuine standout in their field. Dominicans are just as passionate about baseball as Americans, making this term particularly fitting for the Dominican Republic—and for a Dominican cigar producer. Founder and owner Francisco Almonte chose this name to emphasize that his cigars are first-class and capable of competing in the top league, without shying away from comparison with other Dominican cigars.

DBL Extra Viejo Cigars: A Unique Blend of Flavors

Francisco has been active in the cigar industry since 1983 and has been producing under his own brand, DBL Cigars by Francisco Almonte, since 2013. At the age of seven, he helped his father strip tobacco leaves; by twelve, he was already rolling cigars. On his path to independence, he worked with Carlos “Carlito” Fuente (Arturo Fuente Cigars) and Litto Gomez (La Flor Dominicana Cigars). These two major figures in the cigar industry provided Francisco with a wealth of knowledge that he poured into his own brand. As a result, he has mastered the ability to create cigars that deliver both full flavor and flawless construction. We have divided his portfolio into four distinct series, following the structure of his own company website.

Francisco Almonte: A Master of the Cigar Industry

The DBL Extra Viejo cigars presented here are at least medium-bodied and offer rich and savory flavors. The beautiful Mexican Arapiraca wrapper is smooth and silky, displaying a dark, oily sheen. The binder is Dominican, while the filler is a blend of Dominican and Brazilian tobaccos. Initially, gentle sweet and woody notes dominate, gradually becoming more pronounced as the cigar progresses. From the midpoint onward, the intensity increases, with dark fruit flavors and a peppery undertone delighting the palate. These excellent cigars are not intended for beginners—they should be smoked slowly and with care to fully appreciate their character. The cigar band bears the words “Doble Prensado,” indicating that the cigars are pressed twice during production. Here you will find an overview of all DBL Cigars from his portfolio.
