From Jonathan Drew to an International Cigar Manufacturer

The company was founded by Jonathan Drew, who opened his first cigar kiosk in Manhattan in the mid-1990s. There, he sold cigars to local customers and laid the foundation for what would later become his cigar manufacturing business. In 1998, the company expanded to Estelí, Nicaragua, where it established its own factory. The small shop developed into an international company known for innovation, quality and creativity. Drew Estate cigars combine tradition with modern production methods, while the company nevertheless remained family-run for many years. The Toro from the Sun Grown series that I tested impresses with intense, spicy notes – a smoke that delivers plenty of flavor and character without becoming overwhelming.

The Variety of Factory Smokes Sun Grown

The series offers different wrapper varieties for different flavor profiles: Sun Grown with earthy, spicy notes and a touch of sweetness, Shade for a mild, creamy smoke, and the dark Maduros as the strongest option. The Robusto, Toro and Gordito formats are available in bundles of 10 cigars each. The Factory Smokes Sun Grown therefore stand for a more intense yet still approachable smoking experience. Founder Jonathan Drew surprisingly sold his company to Swisher in 2014, a corporation primarily known for machine-made and flavored products. The main idea behind the deal was apparently to take over Drew Estate's business involving its smaller and flavored products. Many of these sought-after products are available individually packaged at convenience stores and gas stations throughout the USA, where they sell in very large quantities. Jonathan Drew initially left the company but returned as president in 2017 to bring his “spirit” back into product development. The birth of his son in December 2023 significantly changed JD's outlook on life. Since then, he has been working to build something for his son JD II (Jonathan Drew the Second). In 2026, for example, he launched projects such as J. Sann & Son in Miami, combining cigars, gastronomy and culture. Incidentally, the “proper” name of both guys is Jonathan Drew Sann – hence the name of the cigar shop and venue in Miami.
