Drew Estate Factory Smokes Sungrown
The Factory Smokes by Drew Estate offer an uncomplicated, high-quality cigar experience for everyday enjoyment. The Sun Grown variant is aimed at aficionados who prefer spicy, handmade cigars from Nicaragua with a more intense character. Whether during a relaxed evening on the terrace, a walk, or social gatherings – the Factory Smokes Sun Grown deliver an earthy aroma, pleasant spice, and reliable quality. Each cigar is carefully crafted by experienced torcedores, ensuring that even in this price-conscious segment, the unmistakable signature of Drew Estate remains evident. They were introduced in 2018 in a total of four variants, one of which features a sweetened tip. For the market launch in Germany in spring 2026, the importer GRE introduced not only the Sun Grown variant presented here but also the lighter Shade version. The binder and filler used in each case consist of 100% Indonesian tobacco, although Drew Estate does not provide specific details about the growing regions.
From Jonathan Drew to an International Manufacturer
The company was founded by Jonathan Drew, who opened his first cigar kiosk in Manhattan in the mid-1990s. There, he sold cigars to local customers and laid the foundation for his later manufacturing operation. In 1998, the business expanded to Estelí, Nicaragua, where its own factory was established. From a small shop, it grew into an international company known for innovation, quality, and creativity. Drew Estate cigars combine tradition with modern production methods while remaining family-run for many years. The Toro from the Sun Grown series that I tested impresses with intense, spicy notes – a smoke that offers flavor and character without being overwhelming.
The Variety of Factory Smokes Sun Grown
The series offers different wrapper variations for a range of flavor profiles: Sun Grown with earthy, spicy notes and a subtle sweetness, and Shade for a mild, creamy smoke. The formats Robusto, Toro, and Gordito are offered in bundles of 25 each. The Factory Smokes Sun Grown thus stand for a more intense yet still accessible smoking experience. Founder Jonathan Drew surprisingly sold his company in 2014 to the corporation Swisher, which is primarily known for machine-made and flavored products. The idea behind the deal was likely mainly to take over the business of smaller and flavored products from Drew Estate. Many of these sought-after products are available individually packaged at kiosks and gas stations in the USA and sell there in very large quantities. John initially left the company but returned in 2017 as president to reintroduce his “spirit” into product development. The birth of his son in December 2023 significantly changed JD’s worldview. Since then, he has been striving to build something “for” his son JD II (that is, Jonathan Drew the Second). As a result, he initiated projects such as J. Sann & Son in Miami in 2026, combining cigars, gastronomy, and culture. The “correct” name of the two boys is actually Jonathan Drew Sann – hence the name of the cigar shop and location in Miami.
