HR Black
The black series from HR Cigars was added to the existing portfolio in 2025 as the fourth line. According to the manufacturer, it represents the strongest offering within the range and is therefore aimed at experienced aficionados who appreciate depth and intensity. Within the hierarchy, the HR Black Line, along with the blue series, is regarded as the most robust expression of the brand, while the black ones presented here bring an “extra kick” of strength. Below that is the somewhat more accessible red HR Signature, while the HR White Cigars represent the mildest entry into the world of HR (Hirochi Robaina) Cigars. However, even these are not mild in the classic sense — lovers of very light cigars are better off with our self-imported La Chaveta White Cigars from Nicaragua.
HR Black Line: Origin, Concept, and Signature
The HR Black Cigars are essentially blended the same as the blue HR Cigars, only the dark Maduro wrapper from Ecuador here has the additional designation “intenso” from the manufacturer. That’s almost a bit intimidating — but you just have to get through it. I treated myself to a Short Toro and was surprised that the strength is very pleasantly “packaged.” Subjectively, of course, it even seems somewhat more harmonious and pleasant to me than the blue “sister.” Like all series from HR Cigars, they are also produced in Estelí under the direction of Cuban exile Omar Gonzalez Aleman. For the wrapper, a particularly dark fermented Maduro to Oscuro wrapper from Ecuador, labeled “intenso,” is used. This was allowed to age significantly longer than in the lighter lines. The binder comes from Nicaragua, and the filler relies heavily on strong tobaccos from Estelí, complemented by a portion from Jalapa. The signature of Hirochi Robaina, grandson of the Cuban tobacco legend Alejandro Robaina, is particularly evident here: focus on leaf quality, fermentation, and balance rather than showmanship. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Aroma Profile and Enjoyment: What the Black Series Tastes Like
The HR Black Line presents itself from the start as dark, dense, and confident. The entry is characterized by dark chocolate and <strong)roast aromas, accompanied by strong <strong)cedar wood. In the middle third, a pronounced, almost leathery spiciness unfolds, giving the blend structure and length. Sweetness always remains in the background and feels more dry than creamy. Toward the end, the cigar continues to gain pressure without becoming restless. The black series demands attention and a slow smoking pace, but rewards with depth, strength, and a very consistent burn — a clear recommendation for experienced connoisseurs who appreciate strong Nicaraguan cigars.
