A Scottish Mixture is also just an English Blend, isn't it? No, it's not.
The great G.L. Pease once characterised it beautifully.
In an English blend, Latakia and Orient often play the main roles. In Scottish blends, on the other hand, it is Virginia that sets the tone. Latakia and Orient serve more as flavourings - sometimes with a little Perique thrown in for good measure.
The Amigos do Brazil have taken this to heart.
They take a beautifully mature Virginia and use some Black Cavendish and a pinch of Perique to give it velvet slippers.
It comes across very soft, without peaks and totally chilled. To add a little fire, fullness and spice, they add sweet and ethereal Oriental, spicy Dark Fired Leaf and a spoonful of smokiness from the Latakia.
The result is so Scottish that the tin should actually be dressed in tartan. The last time there was such a cuddly soft pleasure was with Royal Niemeyer and their ‘Scottish Blend’. But that was in the late antiquity of the pipe world.
So if you've ever wanted to experience the spicy but velvety pleasure of a ‘Scottish Mixture’: here it is. It doesn't get any more typical or better than this.
